DISCOVER HIDDEN TREASURESWITHIN THE BREFFNI COUNTY
Come visit the Ulster Plantation town of Virginia, developed by successive Marquises of Headfort. Take a guided walking tour of the town or nearby Deerpark Forest with its built and Natural Heritage. Alternatively take a bus tour around Lough Ramor, learn about the history of Virginia Park Lodge, visit General Philip Sheridan’s birthplace, Lurgan’s historic graveyard and church remains or stop at Virginia Fever Hospital.
Explore the town of Ballyjamesduff, founded by Seamus Dove in 1697 around his highly successful taxidermy business. The town is immortalised in song by Percy French with ‘Come back Paddy Reilly to Ballyjamesduff’. A walking tour of the town includes the history of Holy Trinity Church, the Market House, the Percy French sculpture and the Catholic church. Visit the nearby Lough Sheelin, learn about the history of Crover House Hotel, visit Marcus Daly, Copper King of Montana’s birthplace, Kilnacrott House, a Tudor Revival building, constructed on Cromwellian land for Pierce Morton, later a boys’ boarding school in the mid – nineteen hundreds and now The Cavan Centre, an outdoor activity centre for disadvantaged children.

Last and by no means least visit Cavan County Museum, Ballyjamesduff. Where you will be treated to a guided tour around The WW1 Trench Experience, a replica of a WW1 trench and the biggest of its kind of mainland Europe. Visit their indoor and outdoor exhibitions showcasing the rich history the county has to offer.
